It is common for pets to urinate in a vehicle when excited or anxious about the experience of riding in a car. Some animals will also urinate in a vehicle when left locked inside for too long. Removing urine stains and odors from a vehicle are often more difficult than you might initially think. The carpeting and seats in a car are absorbent in nature, and urine can quickly penetrate down into the deepest layers of these surfaces. Driving or riding in a vehicle that is affected by pet urine can be more than bothersome, and many today are looking for a way to effectively remove animal urine from their car.

Animal urine is acidic when wet, and as it dries, it becomes even more highly acidic. The acidic state of urine in both a wet and dry form provide the perfect breeding ground for bacterial growth. Much of the ammonia-based smell that is present from drying or dried urine stems from bacterial growth. This smell can become more pronounced as moisture from humidity or wetness is applied to the area. Unfortunately, the salts and crystals found naturally in urine attract moisture, and this can make the issue of pet urine in your car even more pronounced. In order to remove both the stains and odor associated with pet urine in your car, you must address the issue of the superficial levels of pet urine as well as the pet urine, crystals and salts that are found in deeper layers of the carpet and seating. Without addressing both of these issues, the bothersome smell of pet urine will linger in your car.

Removing animal urine effectively requires you to follow several key steps. First, absorb as much of the wet urine as possible upon discovering it. This can minimize the amount of urine that is absorbed into the deeper layers of the carpeting and seating. If the area is already dried, you can use a black light and pH tester to determine where the odor in the car is stemming from. The affected area should then be flushed with water with a water claw. The area may need to be flushed several times. The water claw will pull water and accompanying urine up and out of the upholstery in an effective way because of its unique lifting capabilities. The area may need to be treated with shampoo and special enzymes to kill the bacteria. Allow the area to dry thoroughly. If odors persist, the area may need to be re-treated. In some cases, seat covers may need to be removed in order to more easily clean the underlying materials.

Cat urine in your vehicle can cause significant damage due to the intense odor and staining it creates. Cats often urinate when they become excited or anxious. This most commonly occurs when you are transporting your pet in your vehicle. However, a cat may climb in through an open car window and mark his territory without your knowledge. While there are many different ways that cat urine can be deposited inside your vehicle, the real issue is how to remove it. Effectively removing cat urine involves multiple restorative steps.

 The Difficulty Associated With Removing Cat Urine

Cat urine is quickly absorbed by many of the surfaces in your car. Surfaces such as carpeting, cloth seats and more are highly absorbent materials, and urine can seep into the cushioning and padding underneath the surface areas very quickly. Staining can be an issue, but the odor of cat urine is often more significant. Cat urine is highly acidic, and as it dries, urine crystals are left behind. These tiny crystals will be present on the surfaces of the vehicle as well as deep underneath the surfaces. When they become wet with humidity or your own cleaning efforts, they release a strong ammonia scent. Your own cleaning efforts will remove these crystals on a superficial level, but they will not penetrate and reach the crystals at the deeper levels of the upholstery. This is why the strong odor of cat urine may linger despite your best efforts at removing the stains on your own. There is also a secondary source of odors that can cause the strong scent of cat urine to linger in your car. The unique composition of pet urine coupled with warmth and moisture make it ideal for bacterial growth to develop. As bacteria grows in this area, it can cause a secondary or underlying odor.

 Effective Removal Method

The strong smell of cat odor can be a significant issue for a vehicle owner, and removing it requires skill and expertise. Both the cat urine and related crystals along with bacterial growth will need to be addressed. Effective cleansing techniques involve locating the affected areas of the vehicle with the use of a black light and pH testing device, and flushing the affected area thoroughly with the use of a water claw. This step may need to be repeated numerous times in order to flush out the crystals. After this process has been completed, the area should be treated with special enzymes. Further, the smell of cat urine can also make its way into the ventilation system of the car. The ventilation system often will need to be treated as well to fully remove the smell of cat urine.

Even if you’ve never heard of artillery fungus, also known as shotgun fungus (genus: Sphaerobolus stellatus), you may have seen it, particularly in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states. It appears as sticky, tiny black or brown spots on your house, decks, plants or paint surface of your automobile. It looks like bug droppings and is often misdiagnosed in the detail industry as tree sap, but are actually scaly spores.

Without getting too technical, these spores come from a fungus which establishes colonies in and on organic materials such as rotting wood, wood-based mulch and animal manure when temperatures are between 50 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit during the spring and fall seasons

Artillery fungus spores grow inside tiny cups that burst when they’re exposed to bright light. The spores emit an incredibly sticky liquid that rivals Super Glue, enabling them to glob on to anything they hit up to 20 feet away—including your car. Because they are light-sensitive, you’re most likely to find them on reflective surface of white or silver colored vehicles.

Artillery fungus isn’t corrosive or an allergen, but causes millions of dollars of cosmetic damage to paint surfaces and is an annoying eyesore that’s almost impossible to remove. The longer it remains bonded to the paint surface of an automobile the harder it sticks. Even if you pry off the dark little bumps, a brown stain often remains. If you don’t catch the little bumps and destroy them, they can survive for up to 12 years and reinfest the ground wherever they fall.

Scrubbing and scraping the black spots from the paint surface of an automobile with strong chemical cleaners is a time-consuming chore that can scratch and damage the paint. In fact many detailers have been known to speed up the process by blowing them off the paint surface by closely aiming the pressure washer directly at them. This type of pressure can fracture the clear coat, not to mention that entire pieces of clear coat can be ripped from the surface of the vehicle. Removing the fungus safely is possible with hot soapy water and scrubbing gently on each spot with a micro-fiber towel making sure to properly dispose of the spores.

Once you’re rid of the spores, the best way to avoid a re-appearance is to stay clear of wood mulch. If you use it in your yard, don’t have it near the house or driveway, turn it and break it up regularly to aerate it and dry it out, and completely replace it every year. If that sounds like too much work, use stones for landscaping instead.
